Carnal Curiosity A Stone Barrington Novel Stuart Woods Books
Woods is putting these books out too fast, and it shows. Stone used to be a good character, ok, we are not speaking literature here, but, light reading. When it had a 2 star rating I should have taken notice. It is not like you are not aware what is going to occur, but, he has made Stone into a male whore. He sleeps with anything that walks, after knowing them 5mi, it becomes very tiresome. His lines are always the same now, in the last 3 books, and I am sure the one coming out soon will be the same. Another very well known author did this, then wised up when the book went on the sale rack 3wks after its release. That writer was actually a fabulous one, he just gave into the system and writes fluff, his wife does not. Mr Woods would be wise to think about his characters, the time we live in, and make some changes. Not once is a condom mentioned. I really do not know if I will purchase another of his boos, I know I will not buy the one coming out next, everything it is about is in the write up. Wait, no, Stone, will sleep with a tall blonde after 3mi in her presence, Dino will be his same childish selfTags : Amazon.com: Carnal Curiosity (A Stone Barrington Novel) (9780399164163): Stuart Woods: Books,Stuart Woods,Carnal Curiosity (A Stone Barrington Novel),G.P. Carnal Curiosity A Stone Barrington Novel Stuart Woods Books Reviews
Stuart Woods weaves a good tale and is an easy, comfortable read. I have told him in the past that he has no idea how to write about sex and should either learn from one of the female masters or just leave it alone. I find it odd that he tries to make Stone Barrington look so classy when it comes to his lifestyle, but talks so crudely about making love. In fact, he never uses the term "making love" at all. He is constantly dropping the F bomb instead and seems to like his women lewd and crude.. It knocks him down a peg in my book. Since his audience is more female than male, he could stand some improvement in this area.
I think I have read every one of Stuart Woods' books, so this opinion is based on my personal knowledge of his ability and past performance. This one is a STINKER. Seems obvious he was just cranking one out to please the publisher and agent. There is a "scene" where a fancy dinner party at a high-rise Manhattan apartment is raided by masked armed robbers; after millions of dollars worth of jewelry is taken from the attendees, the host invites them to help themselves to the buffet while they await the arrival of the police. They obligingly accept and help themselves. Really? Really? This is just a taste of this whole sorry effort.
... a thought occurred that all the books that are coming out this year with Stone, of which I believe there are four, could have been one, maybe two, bigger books instead of broken down into four? You can tell by looking at the cover art where the next one is going. It doesn't mean that I will cancel my pre-order. I still very much enjoy Mr. Woods books and I look forward to each one (unlike James Patterson who I have given up on all together). Predictable as some say? Yes. Fast read? Yes, but aren't they all. Fun read? Yes!
While I enjoy Stone, I would love to see some of the other series get another chapter. Like with Holly. Granted she is not in Orchid Beach anymore, but her adventures in her position with the government would be fun. Ed Eagle? Maybe not so much. Rick Barron? I loved the setting of old time Hollywood (one of my favorite authors was the late Stuart Kaminsky's Toby Peter's books).
Keep up the good work, Mr. Woods. Thank you for the adventure and keep them coming.
This should really not be called a novel, but a novella---it can be read in short order. It is slightly better than the last several Stone Barrington books Stuart Woods has churned out in that there are several plots. Kate Lee has decided to run for President, for one thing and Stone finds himself caught up in a series of robberies, one very personal in that the collection of his mother's paintings have been stolen from his home. An immediate suspect is Crane Hart, an insurance adjuster who comes to his home and recognizes the paintings. Stone has her in bed by page 7, which may be a record for his conquests. There is a bit more action in this for both Stone and Dino, instead of the usual fluff of constantly eating at P. J. Clarke's, The Four Seasons and Patroon. Barrington fans will like this book, but one can't help but wish for the fire and dash that were the hallmarks of early Barrington novels. There is a part of Stone Barrington that has become rather vapid.
Carnal Curiosity is another chapter in the fascinating life of Stone Barrington and, personally, i feel like this is about as much as a "callback" to Stone's earlier life as Stuart could possibly do.
What I liked
1. Stone actually does some of the same stuff he used to do as a detective. I'm not a hater of "the rich and powerful Stone" but it's nice to see him call back some of those intimidation tactics and such from his cop days.
2. The story in this one is actually pretty good. A little more mystery than many of Woods' more recent Stone books. Of course, it's fairly obvious who the criminal is but finding the evidence to prove it feels like a callback to the "Stone was a cop" days.
What I disliked
1. Stone's ridiculous luck. A part of an armed robbery and didn't even take a gun-handle to the noggin.
2. Also, Stone's women for this particular book really didn't try all too hard.
Overall, not a bad book. I would read it again and my nit picks are small issues and not things that ruin the book.
Stuart Woods delivers a typical formulaic Stone Barrington novel and if you like the familiar characters and predictable casual bed-hopping of Stone and everyone he meets, then it is a decent light read. After so many novels, Woods knows how to craft a story to hold a reader's mild interest. However, the main problem I see developing in the last several stories is the ever-growing emergence of the author's very strong very liberal political views. It would be acceptable if it were presented as just part of character development, but this is now a soapbox from which the author is expounding upon his own agenda. That is not what I am looking for in my novels. There are many other avenues available for politics. His next book, Cut and Thrust, is even more objectionable in this respect. I will probably not be reading Book 31, mostly for this reason. Just too political!!
