Chill Wind Janet McDonald Books Reviews
I really liked this story.....at first. It delt with real beliefs that some people carry today and it told a valuable lesson. However, the "cinderella" ending is way too unbelievable for a story that is written so realistically. Many young people will read this story and I think it is wrong to send the type of message that the story's ending gave. The main character was lazy, dropped out of high school and refused to work. "Just let the system take care of you" was her motto. Most people who drop out of school, go on welfare expecting the system to take care of them and then refuse to work when they get cut from public assistance do NOT get offered a dream job as an actress, along with wealth and fame as a solution to their problem. And was the main character offered this opportunity because she was hard working? went back to school? got a job? changed her thuggish ways? NO!!!!!! She got offered it because she was "pretty" and had "guts." GIVE ME A BREAK! The ending ruined what could have been a wonderful story. I cannot give this more than 3 stars. And I do not recommend it to young impressionable minds.
Aisha Ingram is a 19-year-old high-school dropout living in the projects with her two kids and no job. She's on welfare, living it up, partying and "chilling" until she gets several notices that her welfare check will be discontinued and her only option for income is to join a workfare program. Not liking the various job choices available through Workfare, she comes up with schemes and plans to outsmart the welfare office. Once they backfire on her, she takes a subway patrol job. Shortly thereafter, she answers a modeling ad and from there things begin to look up for her, but for how long?
McDonald has given us a wonderful depiction of a young girl that makes numerous mistakes in her life, but learns to focus on believing in herself and leaning on family and friends. I did feel the story was a bit too perfect in how it ended, but overall I'd recommend it to others. The dialogue is fresh and real and the characters are believable. In addition, the story is smooth reading and quick paced. I think that it is one that young adults will enjoy and pick up the lessons outlined by the author.

Aisha is a young teenager mother of two who wants the system to take care of her the rest of her life. For her there is nothing better than chilling and getting her welfare check at the beginning of each month. She lives with her mom and her son and daughter. Everything is going well, until the state gives Aisha a notice saying that she is being cut off the system and that they have a few options to choose from. The problem is Aisha doesn't want to work in dull jobs cause she wants to chill.
The author drew me into this story quickly. Aisha isn't a likeable character. She's kinda moody, has a temper, is somewhat lazy and at times annoying. With all that said I still find her interesting. I want to know why she wanted to be on welfare. I enjoyed the window into a world that I knew nothing about(I'm a white chick from the country in Upstate NY). While I didn't agree with many of the choices the main character made I can understand why she did them. The dynamics with her mother were interesting as well. It was a sad relationship. Her mother drank herself into oblivion because her husband left and she was stuck in a low paying job. Sometimes she would take her anger out on Aisha(verbally, not physically.)
My nose was glued to this book and I read through it wanting to see what happened to Aisha. The ending destroyed the book for me. There are many books where I don't like their ending but this one was different. The ending was too ridiculous for words. Everything works out for the main character. Common? Seriously? If the author wanted to give the reader some hope then she could have tackled the ending another way. Maybe Aisha could have seen that education was her ticket out of her situation> Instead the author presents an unbelievable situation that ruins the story.
I think this author has talent. I'd love to read another book about the inner city from her. However, I wish she would make the ending more realistic.
Great book
I liked the book it was interesting how a high school girl who grew up in the projects came to become a super model and turned her life around.
Great
Everyone knows how much life takes a toll in you and this book tells you how it is in the "hood". Life is tough but this book showed me that you can't chill and do nothing, when life knocks you down get back up and give it a BANG. It's a great book how a ghetto girl makes it in the hood.
