Finding Her Feet Drama Tragedy Family Life Jams N Roses Books
I liked the book overall but I thought some of it was more graphic than it needed to be. From the preview of the book online I knew the book was about a girl whose sister died and tore her family apart as she struggled to overcome and make a life for herself. However, that really was just the beginning of the bad decisions that led her down the darkest alleys of life. I'm not sure I would have read the book had I know the darkness of the plot. I found it to be depressing. But overall the writing was good and the end has a good ending.Tags : Amazon.com: Finding Her Feet: Drama. Tragedy. Family. Life. (9781491268360): Jams N. Finding Her Feet Drama Tragedy Family Life Jams N Roses Books Reviews
This book grabbed me from page one and I flew through its pages quickly. A family of five falls into dysfunction after one of the twin girls falls through the ice and dies leaving Mom, Dad and the remaining two daughters to struggle on with their lives. Struggle is putting it mildly for surviving twin Amanda and the story is told from her perspective. Because there is no extensive dialogue between any of the characters, you come to feel that you are actually seeing the point of view of a naïve teenager. At times heartbreaking, (okay, throughout the whole thing I was heartbroken for Amanda) it is thought provoking and maddening at once. Families are tough to navigate on the best of days. Throw in death, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, and sexual abuse and you have a real nightmare on your hands. This independent author somehow manages to bring it all back together leaving you feeling better for having read it.
Sad tale of an extremely unlucky family. Good examples of consequences and how life is what you make of it, even in adversity. I found Amanda's rapid growth and maturity inspiring, I would recommend this book to anyone. Well done.
This was a really sad and tragic novel. The story begins with three little girls; Michelle, who is ten, and twin seven-year-old girls, Amanda and Samantha. Samantha ends up falling through broken ice and dying, which destroys their family. Their devastated mother is barely even a mother anymore, especially to Michelle, whom she blames since she was supposed to be watching them. Both Amanda and Michelle are stricken with guilt.
The story then follows Amanda as she gets older and becomes a teenager. She moves out to live with her aunt and cousin so she can attend dance school. But instead of pursuing her dream, she gets involved with the wrong people and gets caught up in a dark world of drugs and sex. Like the other book I read by this author, this novel does not hold anything back.
Amanda is extremely naive and immature, and even though I know she's young, I was still tempted to slap her at times for her poor decisions. It was hard not to empathize with her, however, especially when she does try to turn her life around. This girl has extremely bad luck, and it was upsetting to read about all that she went through. Some of it was her own doing, but some of it was definitely out of her control and very heartbreaking.
At times, there was more telling than showing, but overall, I enjoyed it, and I kept wanting to turn the page to read more. I was hoping this dysfunctional family could reunite and find a way to reconcile. I was also hoping that Amanda would get out of the seedy world she found herself in so she could be happy. And although I don't necessarily agree with a sixteen-year-old girl being with a man in his early thirties, I could probably understand it more than most since my mother was only sixteen when she married my father, and he was thirty-two at the time. They're still together after well over thirty years of marriage.
If you like dark and realistic dramas that delve into some heavy topics, then this is a book I would definitely recommend for you.
I'm sitting here, reading my kindle, and trying to stifle my crying so I wouldn't wake my husband. (That is a terrible run on sentence)
This family suffers from tragedy after tragedy. If u enjoy a real tear jerker u won't go wrong with this one.
By the time it got the least bit interesting, it was too late, the book was finished and you knew what was going to happen before hand.
I'm writing this review with tears in my eyes and yet a smile in my heart. At first reading I thought this is just another book about sex and its aftermath; however it develops into one of the most emotional and heart wrenching love stories I've read in a long time. It deals with hate, forgiveness and develops into a true love story not just between two people but within an entire family. I couldn't put it down.
I didn't think I was going to like this book but it kept pulling me back in. Things in England are so much different than they are in the US. I can't imagine a family letting a child leave home at 15 y/o and not keep in close contact. What Amanda went thorough I am not sure many you adults would make it. Thank God for the Browns and John coming into her life.
I cried thru the last part of the book. How a girl of 16 almost 17 make such unselfish decisions and be such and adult about it, I will never know. Thumbs Up to the author. I will look for more books now.
