I just couldn't put it down. The author did a wonderful job. I had never heard of this author, so I had serious doubts. I was so impressed. I sat down and really expected to get up in 5 minutes. That wasn't the case. I finished this in less than a day.it had everything. Murder, romance. intrigue, suspense and so much more. Do not let the fact the heroine is in HS deter you. lol, I have been out of college for years. I can't even really remember high school. This is so much more than just a teenage romance.
Even better, I would not be opposed to my teenage niece picking it up. Other than some kissing it was free of sex!
I am a very fast reader, but this could easily be read over a weekend.

Kaleidoscope Faylinn Book 1 edition by Mindy Hayes Children eBooks Reviews
I have been a follower of Mindy Hayes for some time now. I was introduced to her by Michele and couldn’t wait to get my hands on one of her novels. Well, I got my hands on it and then let it sit in my To Be Read pile for a bit of time. What a silly decision!! I am a sucker for fantasy novels, especially well-written ones like Kaleidoscope. Hayes pulled me in with her prologue and I was reading with bated breath until the last page. Truth be told, it took me a day to finish this book; I just couldn’t put it down.
I enjoyed getting to know Calliope, the main character of this novel, and meeting her friends and family. Calliope is discovering herself and not all of these discoveries are easy for her. She’s well-developed and continues to grow through this novel, and surely into the next two. Cameron, Calliope’s best friend, is another character I loved. He’s the perfect best friend and I love the dynamic between him and Calliope. Now, Kai and Declan are fabulous. Their banter and honesty made me look forward to each time they appeared, wondering what would happen next.
Hayes writes with a lot of color and description, allowing the reader to easily visualize what is happening in the story. The use of nature to drive the plot enhanced the story and became almost a character in itself. Fantasy has always been a favorite genre of mine, getting lost in a world I wish could exist beyond what I know. Hayes helped make that vision come to life on the pages of Kaleidoscope.
The next two books were on my Wishlist even before I finished this one and I can’t wait to add them to my Hayes experience.
This is one of those addictive series.
I enjoy a good contemporary YA on a regular basis. I also appreciate a good paranormal. This one started out in a solid contemporary conflict that had me sold, no kidding, within the first page or two. There was no going back. Calliope is really genuine and extremely likable. I rooted for her from page one and respected her at the same time. How often do you RESPECT a character? Seriously? Her world is rather small, evolving around just her, two best friends, and her parents, which is the only aspect I found somewhat unbelievable, but it didn't detract from the story in any way.
Now part two. Where the story changes...and suddenly there's magic in the air. Because the initial conflict was built so solidly, I was almost sad to see the focus shift to a...well I can't really call it paranormal angle. It was more a magical level. Paranormal intones a level of darkness this book didn't possess. Yes, there was a sinister villain, and yes, he caused suffering to an extreme, but the majority of the story really evolved around family, friends, and unrequited love.
The climax wasn't particularly explosive, but I really don't care. How strange is that? I was so invested in the characters that as soon as I finished the book (in the middle of the night) I was on looking for the next one. If I'd had the whole series downloaded, I would have binge read the whole thing in a day and a half--even with a bunch of kids needing attention hanging on me. Even while driving. Even when I should be sleeping.
So yes, I very much enjoyed this book. If you like faery lore, contemporary stories, and a YA voice, this is an excellent choice of book.
Content warning Clean.
You ever have so much you dislike about a book you can't even put aside your groans of regret while clawing at your eyes to properly spell out just what you didn't like? Well, I am in the midst of such an experience. I thought a pretty cover and a nice faerie concept would've made for a decent casual read, but once again a freebie on tricked me into downloading a shallow book with a poorly delivered story and heavily unlikable heroine. There were bits of sexism and toxic-gendering (apparently "wings" are "too girly" for a male faerie to have and that's literally the only reason they lack wings. Really? I wasn't aware wings had a gender and that by having something "feminine" a man suddenly isn't a man anymore. Giant eye roll from me.), and internalized misogyny and all that gross junk mixed together with a juvenile idea of what a bad society is and a horribly cliche high school setting. I wanted to like this book but god, I kept rolling my eyes or putting my face in my hands in exasperation so often that I skimmed the last 2/3 of the book and was glad I hadn't wasted too much time on this.
I feel bad giving such a poor review, I'm usually really lax and try to find the good in each story, giving a 2 is rare for me, but I just couldn't find much to salvage here in terms of what was worthy of praise. Perhaps the author gets better in the next two books but I'm not giving any money to find out. Trust me and skip out on this one. There are far better books about faeries out there with similar ideas but with much better characters and story lines.
